New Moon in Sagittarius - Constructive and Exuberant Growth

Forecast for 17th - 31st December 2006

Packed into this fortnight is a New Moon in Sagittarius, the Winter Solstice, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Not much happening then!

The first few days of this period see the waning energy of a lunar cycle, a good time to pause and take a deep breath before the new cycle begins.

On Sunday, 17th December, the Sun trines Saturn, resonating briefly with this time of ‘pause’; it’s a time when acknowledgement of limitations, and the need for patience can be accepted more readily. There’s also a harmonious balance between the needs of the ego, and parameters that exist to prevent excessive self-absorption. This all helps to increase the productive flow of energy enabling steady progress.

The Scorpio Moon on the same day, however, is square Saturn and Neptune, so emotionally there may be a feeling of being hindered, frustrated and possibly confused!

The spell of ‘pause’ breaks, even though the New Moon isn’t quite upon us, as powerful, exuberant astrological energy flows into Monday 18th, like a stream of magical, sparkling, starry coloured light. The Moon leaves intense Scorpio for the lighter vibes of Sagittarius, and then conjuncts Jupiter, increasing the sense of bonhomie, fun, and optimism. Expansion and growth are keywords, especially on the home front, and humour enhances the feel-good factor. Release is also associated with this Jupiterian energy, providing a portal through which freedom can be reached.

Interestingly, the Sun conjuncts Pluto also on Monday, which is symbolic of power and control, used either positively or negatively. World figures, and people with power generally, may be in the spotlight. Pluto is the planet of transformation, and is closely entwined with the Sun and Moon as they join together for the next monthly lunar cycle.

The New Moon happens on Wednesday, 20th December at 14.01 (GMT), and all three celestial bodies, the Sun, the Moon and Pluto trine Saturn in Leo, making this an extremely powerful occurrence. It’s a time of great change, one when a new period of constructive building can take place. From world leaders to the ‘boss’, to how each individual uses her or his own power, it’s a time of change. The old ways need refining; there will be those who have gone as far as they can in their position, and now need to hand this over to the next in line.

On an individual level, it’s a great time to re-assess how you use your own power, and how much you give away, possibly unconsciously, to other people. Now is the time to take hold of the reins, and direct the course you wish to travel in. Choose you vehicle and drive it with joy. The trines from the Sun, Moon and Pluto to Saturn symbolize a steady, progressive time of building something worthwhile, durable, and of meaningful value.

Venus in Capricorn sextiles Uranus in Pisces on New Moon Wednesday, indicating the potential for new ways of making money, and then conjuncts the Moon, now in Capricorn, on Thursday, 21st, making this a day for pleasure and love.

Mars in Sagittarius squares Uranus in Pisces on Friday, 22nd December. This is a volatile combination, to say the least, so go steady when travelling. It’s an aspect of unpredictable, excitable erratic energy, sometimes heralding sudden upsets. Uranus is connected to electricity, and new technology of all kinds, so if you’re rewiring, setting up a new computer, or launching a space ship, take extra care.

It’s the Winter Solstice also on Friday 22nd, a day of deep significance for the Celts in past times, and a meaningful day for many around the world today. It’s a time when the Sun appears to stand still (‘solstice’ meaning this), having reached its most southerly point, before turning to begin its ascent in the sky, as a golden orb of warmth and light.

This is another time when it’s good to pause, to think about what the year has brought, to think about and plan ahead for the next phase. The Winter Solstice is also a time for linking together with others (the Summer Solstice is a time for individuality), celebrating, and aiming for re-integration into the whole, the ‘family’, (this may be one of kindred souls, and/or blood-relatives), and the ecological structure of the planet.

Around this time, if I have the opportunity, I go to my local stone circle, and just take time to reflect, be thankful and feel the connection with the earth. It’s a peaceful interlude and momentary respite from all the commercial madness of Christmas, and it always helps me put things in perspective, and enables me to see clearly.

Any place outside that feels good, preferably green, will do. If you take pen and paper you can write down any thoughts that pop into your head while you switch off the ‘monkey mind’, and retreat to that place where you can hear that small voice of intuition that always makes sense, is always loving and helpful. This is a great Christmas present that you can give yourself – five minutes peace and serenity in nature, time to listen to the birds and watch the clouds.

There’s an easy feel to Saturday, 23rd December, great for any last minute shopping, and after an interesting dreamtime, (for those in the UK the Moon conjuncts Neptune at 4.51), there’s a practical, ‘getting sorted’ feel to Christmas Eve. Mercury trines Saturn, and the Moon opposes Saturn.

A compassionate, sympathetic Pisces Moon (1.43) imbues Christmas Day with an easy flow, as she sextiles the Sun, and then squares Jupiter at 13.29. The latter is an aspect of over-indulgence, and Pisces enjoys anything escapist. Need I say more?

Mercury conjuncts Pluto on the 25th too, indicating the possibility of things being revealed that were previously hidden, or secret. A family member or friend may suddenly spill the beans about something. Communication may feel intense for a time, and you may want to move away to a place of quiet, or lose yourself in a good film. The Moon conjuncts Uranus in the evening in the UK (21.11), adding a bit of sparkle and surprise, and waking you up from post-Christmas dinner slump (or slumber).

The result of over-indulging may be felt early on 26th December (Moon square Mars), but good feelings abound as the Moon sextiles Venus.

Wednesday, 27th looks mixed (see aspects below), and as the Moon speeds into fiery, enthusiastic Aries, cast off any feelings of fed-up-ness, the dip after all the madness and fun, and go for a walk. Walking will reconnect you to the earth, re-centre you and put you firmly back in your body. From this point your spirits will lift, and you’ll be back in the flow, ready to be inspired (Moon trine Jupiter).

Also on Wednesday 27th, Mercury dons his winged boots, and flies from fiery Sagittarius into the earth sign of Capricorn. Practical, work matters come to the fore now, plans and strategies for making those Sagittarian ideals and dreams manifest in the real world. Moving forwards step by step, working patiently, will bring you nearer and nearer to your goal. Little acorns grow into big trees. You just have to remember to plant them, and then look after them. It’s the same with anything creative, and also relationships.

Friday, 29th December is a great day to follow this up with maybe making some notes, mind-mapping on what you would like in your life for the coming year. The Moon moves in to Taurus, giving a grounded, practical, and sensual feel to the day. Harmonious trines from the Moon to Mercury and the Sun indicate that the heart, mind and spirit can work and flow together today, aiding clarity on what it is you really want.

Apart from the Moon square Neptune, when you could feel pulled between following a wish/dream/fantasy, or being practical (for some reason I thought of the sales then, when many a ‘bargain’ turns out to be not quite so when it reaches home!), Saturday 30th is a quiet day.

New Year’s Eve is imbued with a blend of different tastes. The Moon square Saturn aspect could increase feelings of loneliness and isolation, but this is swiftly followed by a trine to Venus, which is connected to feelings of warmth, love and friendliness. The flavour of the Moon changes at 11.16 (GMT) when she enters airy Gemini, the sign of versatility, duality, wit and easy chat. Parties should go with a swing and lightness, and easy banter will be the order of the day. It is a time to lighten up and not take anything too seriously, as it could all change quite soon.

Mars sextiles Neptune also on 31st December. This is an aspect of compassion, of wanting to help others who are less fortunate. It’s also a creative combination so I’ll leave you with this extract from an old poem, a Celtic blessing, which I have changed just very slightly.

“Deep peace of the running wave to you,
Deep peace of the flowing air to you,
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
Deep peace of the shining stars to you,
Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
May the road rise to meet you;
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
May the rain fall softly on your fields.
Until we meet again,
May the Great Mother hold you in the hollow of her hand.”

I wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas.
